Art Submission:

(1) Can I send my entry through postal mail or email?

No, we will only be accepting online submissions through the online submission process. We will not accept entries through postal mail or traditional email.

tipDon't have a camera? Have a photo taken for you. If you don’t have a digital camera you may try visiting a local photo supply retailer. They may be able to take a photo of your artwork at the retail location and give you a digital version of it. Just tell them the file size as described in the submission process.

(2) The photo of my artwork is being rejected. What should I do?

This probably means that it is either in the wrong file format or is too large.

We accept images in JPEG (.jpg) format. No other formats can be accepted.

Convert photo to a JPEG. Most photo editing applications (i.e. iPhoto or MS Picture Viewer) allow you to save a photo in multiple formats. Open the photo of your artwork in the editing/viewing program and choose the "save as" option in your file menu. Just choose the JPEG or .jpg format and continue with the save.

Reduce the file size. Also, if your file is too large you should reduce it. Most common photo editing software applications (i.e. iPhoto or MS Picture Viewer) have a feature that allows you to reduce the size of your photo. Check the help section of your individual application if you have more questions on how to do this.

tipIf you are using a PC with Microsoft Office Picture Manager 2003 or newer...

tipIf you are using a Mac with iPhoto 6 or newer...

(3) Can I submit more than one entry?

No, only one entry will be accepted. Anyone discovered to have submitted multiple entries would have all artwork entries disqualified.

tipMake sure you submit the artwork you are most confident about.

(4) Are there any restrictions to the size, type, or format of the original artwork?

Yes. There are size restrictions. While there aren't specific dimensions, the Grand Prize Winner's art must be able to be shipped to Kirkland's Home. We will need to have the original work of art for a short time to create the best image reproduction of it.

tipIf it is a size or format that can't be shipped then it should not be submitted.

Contest Rules:

(1) Does Kirkland's Home own my artwork if I submit it?

No. Kirkland's Home will only use the photo of your artwork for judging purposes.

(2) Who decides if I am a finalist?
(3) How long will the public get to vote?

Kirkland's Home has an in-house panel of judges that will be judging each work of art on preset criteria. These judges will select the 10 works of art to be considered by the public.

Once the ten finalist are chosen we will get high-resolution images of each piece of art to display on the website. The public will vote over a 30-day period. Voting will end on December 17th, 2007.

(4) When will I find out if I am
  (a)One of the finalists?
  (b)The Next Great American Artist?

Finalists will be announced November 17th, 2007

The Grand Prize Winner will be announced January 15th, 2008.

(5) If I am the winner will Kirkland's Home change my artwork to sell it in the store?

We won't change the integrity of your artwork. The colors, aspect ratio, etc will stay the same. We may have to slightly adjust the original size to make it more sellable, but that's all.

(6) So, what all do I get if I win?

First, you will get bragging rights.

You will also get $5000 as the Next Great American Artist winner.

Kirkland's Home will also negotiate an exclusive contract to sell reproductions of your work. We will also reserve the right of first refusal on contract renewals from that publishing company.

(7) Do I get anything if I am one of the 10 finalists but not the winner?

Yes, the other nine (9) finalists will each get a $500 gift card for Kirkland's Home merchandise. And, of course, the bragging rights that come with being a finalist.

Finalists may be offered a publishing contract as well, but they will not be required to have a publishing deal.
